Tunica’s casinos attract live music performers across all genres. Rock, blues, R&B, pop and country: we’ve got it all to suit the tastes of all visitors. The bands and performers who regularly stop in Tunica gain followers who feel like their visit would be incomplete without seeing a set from their favorite live band. To help our readers get to know these performers a little better, Down the Road is launching a series spotlighting some of our favorite acts.
We’re kicking off our series with rock group Triggerproof. The band is based in Biloxi and plays select Thursdays through Sundays at Stage 2 Bar
at Gold Strike Casino Resort
. Donte Nagle, one of the founders of Triggerproof, and Troy, the band’s drummer, have been playing in Tunica since 1996 when they were members of a band called Noah’s Rain.
“Troy and I may be the two performers who have performed in Tunica the longest,” said Nagle. “We started off playing in Tunica at the Horseshoe.”
As Triggerproof, the band first performed in Tunica after Hurricane Katrina devastated Beau Rivage, their home base on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
“We’ve been the main house band of Beau Rivage in Biloxi for eight years,” said Nagle. “But in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in
2005, Beau Rivage shut down for a year. We began regularly playing in Tunica, and we’ve been in regular rotation between Gold Strike and Biloxi ever since.”
Following the hurricane, Triggerproof also changed their name from Hipboot Joe and revised their set list. In addition to Tunica and Biloxi, the band performs at casino properties in Louisiana and hasn’t missed a spring break performance in Panama City in 10 years. But Nagle said the people in Tunica are what keep the band coming back.
“We have an eclectic mix of people that have followed us through the years,” said Nagle. “It’s a crazy melting pot of locals and people visiting from other cities. They would openly admit to that description. We’ve never played anywhere with so many familiar faces.”
Nagle said that every month the band comes to Tunica, it’s like a reunion. Fans bake them cookies, cakes and dinner. And when they’re in town, band members’ favorite place to drop by for a bite to eat is the Hollywood Café
Triggerproof will perform at Stage2 Bar at Gold Strike this weekend. After that, they’ll be back in Tunica February 28-March 3 and April 18-21. To learn more about Triggerproof, visit their Facebook page
